Candle safety

Ritual candles are still open flames. A few habits keep every burn safe.

• Burn on a heat-safe dish or holder, away from curtains, books and anything that can catch.
• Trim wicks to about a quarter inch before relighting.
• Herb- and glitter-dressed candles can flare as the decoration reaches the flame; stay close.
• Keep candles away from drafts, children and pets.
• Do not move a candle while the wax is liquid.
• Put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep. A snuffer keeps wax from splattering.
